"No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance."
 ~Confucius

It’s here!  The 2011-2012 school year, and it promises to be a great year as your student prepares to make the transition into high school!  I am so pleased to have your child in my class this year.  I look forward to working with you and your child so that each may get the best of what Merriwether Middle School has to offer!

During the year, we will be reading a variety of poems, short stories, plays, and novels.  We will be examining through our reading, writing, and discussion how literature is connected to us and how our lives can be affected by it.  We will also be doing a lot of writing and looking at many different types of writing.  One of the main focuses in my classroom is to understand the connection between reading and writing and to discover what language really is and the power of it.

"When we read a story, we inhabit it.  The covers of the book are like a roof and four walls.  What is to happen next will take place within the four walls of the story.  And this is possible because the story's voice makes everything it's own."
                                                   ~John Berger
